Goal Setting

Goal Setting

What "something new" will you try this year?
In comparison to previous years, this time around I will try to delve deeper into the subject we are studying and if time allows, do more extra readings. I am aware that Language and Literature leans quite a lot on contextual understanding to analyze the content, and to meet that understanding I will do what I mentioned previously. I would also like to push myself outside of my comfort zone and explore opinions and perspectives I would usually and easily discard. I think this will help me be more open-minded and really understanding how people different to myself interpret language. Lastly, by understanding language, I would like to be more analytical and careful when it comes to my writing. I want to make sure that my language choices are in accordance with the reaction I want to get with my reader.

Look at your goals. How will the material that we cover in class help you achieve them?
Because in class we will be focusing specifically at how language and the different choices made when applying it can shape the perspective of the reader, I will easily meet my goal of being more analytical with my writing. For instance, I know we will be looking at advertisement and how word choice can shape the impact of the aforementioned. By understanding word choice and how a slight change can lead to a completely different interpretation, when writing I will be aware of the power of word choice and apply it more wisely. I will also become more open-minded in my opinions through class discussions based on the material we look at. The way we understand language very heavily relies on our cultural background and upbringing and at Raha, everyone is different, specially culturally speaking. Hence, everyone is likely to have differing opinions. By listening closely to those opinions and understanding them, I will become more open-minded. Lastly, the goal about reading further will rely mostly on me and my organization, but the material itself am sure will always have a context. For instance, the novel 'Things Fall Apart' revolves around European colonization of West Africa. Historically, I would delve into that context to expand my knowledge and hopefully, better understand the works' use of language.

What will you learn over the next two years that will contribute to their fulfillment?
I will learn about mass communication and how it applies language, how cultural context can affect the use of language, how historical background and other social factors also affect the aforementioned, and closely analyzing literary works. All of these concepts will aid me in being more analytical with language which aids with my third goal. Furthermore, the study of mass media will help understand why word choice is so critical, but also, how imagery helps exemplify the impact of the language. Lastly, the exposure to numerous texts that will range in time period and cultural context will aid me in being more open-minded and understanding how other people are impacted by their language. Thus, being analytical and open-minded will be the core foundation for reaching my goals.
