Ethics Wrap Up

Divine Command Theory

Utilitarianism
Pros: it considers the final consequent happiness of society, ensuring that the largest number of individuals are positively impacted by the decision.
Cons: sometimes the means may implicate immoral decisions and actions to get the positive outcome, which could essentially rule out the morality of the outcome.

Deontology

Cons:

In the ethical dilemma, a high-school kid who is being bullied wants to be sent to school with a hidden audio recorder by his parents to get insight into the environment their son is exposed to constantly. However, the predominant issue is that, although this could help pinpoint the personified root cause of their son's social issues, it could essentially violate the privacy of the other students. Following the utilitarian perspective, which would be to consider everyone's best interest, it could be argued the camera should not be set up because by benefitting the life (apparently) of one kid, the privacy of all the rest would be violated. Furthermore, it would not prove as beneficial as initially thought because being aware of the camera would lead to the son constantly being aware that his social interactions are being recorded and analyzed by his parents. This could hinder how well he can interact with other teenagers which would effectively only accentuate his bullying, making the situation worse for him.

Looking at this context through a deontological perspective, it could be argued that the camera should be set up because it is against societal rules for others to be bullying the son, and therefore, this would serve as a way to identify those who are violating those aforesaid societal rules and hence face the consequences of their acts. Simultaneously, however, it could also be argued that the camera should not be set up because it goes against the rules that outline and protect and individual's privacy. Hence, deontology becomes a lot more controversial for arriving at a decision in this particular context. Additionally, it must be considered that if the camera is set up, the wellbeing of one person might be created at the expense of violating others' privacy.

It becomes a lot more difficult to utilize the divine command theory in this case just because it is more relative, not only based on the different religions of the individuals involved, but also due to variations within religions themselves. An overarching theme, however, could possibly be that you shouldn't treat others the way you want to be treated. In this case, because peers have been bullying the son, it is only fair that they are held accountable for their actions. Nevertheless, the issue with this would be that students who have nothing to do with this kid's situation may now be damaged in terms of their privacy without a proper ethical justification.
